Columbus, OH – Bernie Moreno said again this morning that “he still believes in national legislation” to ban abortion, which would overturn the will of Ohioans who voted overwhelmingly last year to protect abortion access.

Moreno has said he is “absolute pro-life, no exceptions,” is endorsed by anti-choice politicians like Senator Mike Lee who said that a national abortion ban is an “important part of… what we stand for” and campaigned last week behind closed doors with national abortion ban supporters.

• Bernie Moreno supports a national abortion ban that would overturn the will of Ohioans who voted overwhelmingly to protect abortion rights last year.

• Moreno said he is “100% pro-life with no exceptions” and that he is “absolute pro-life, no exceptions.”

• Moreno opposes protecting a woman’s right to access contraception, including birth control pills. Moreno opposes federal protections for IVF and called IVF a “non-issue” a week after the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that prompted clinics to halt IVF treatments.

• Moreno voted to ban abortion without exceptions for rape or incest in Ohio last year by voting against Issue 1.

• Moreno celebrated the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, calling it a “monumental victory.”

Columbus, OH – Bernie Moreno repeatedly claimed that he “learned English from watching Ronald Reagan’s speeches” at five years old, but new reporting found that the timeline “doesn’t make sense.” This lie is the latest example in a growing “string of inconsistencies” that is “dogg[ing]” Moreno as he attempts to “turn himself into someone he is not.”

• Ohio Republican Senate candidate Bernie Moreno says he learned English from watching Ronald Reagan’s speeches as a child, even though Reagan was not yet a national political figure and Moreno was five years old at the time.

• During an appearance on the “MVRed Podcast” in January 2022, Moreno claimed to have learned English from listening to Reagan’s speeches. When asked about who helped shape his political beliefs, Moreno cited conversations with his father, and speeches by Reagan which he claims to have learned English from.

• “I’d say my dad first. Reagan certainly, you know I learned English listening to Reagan’s speeches as a kid,” Moreno said. “He was very influential in my life politically.”

• During another podcast interview with Ohio Christian Alliance in October 2021, Moreno claimed he listened to Reagan when he started learning English.

• “One of the presidents I got to really know a lot was Reagan because that was my formative years,” Moreno said. “I was just learning English… This was a time that for me was so fortunate to have Ronald Reagan during those years for me.”

• Moreno moved to the United States with his family from Colombia in 1971, when he was about five years old. During an appearance at the Turning Point Action Conference in July 2023, Moreno himself said that he learned English “pretty quickly” after moving to the United States. In a separate radio interview from May 2021, Moreno said he learned English when he was five. Moreno’s parents and older siblings were also fluent or proficient in English at this time, making it extremely unlikely that Moreno substantially “learned English” from Reagan speeches when he was five.

• The Moreno campaign did not immediately respond for clarification on what speeches by Reagan he was watching while learning English at five years old.

• Reagan was also the governor of California at the time, but he had not yet become a national voice for the Republican Party. It wasn’t until his 1976 campaign that Reagan began to make regular radio and television appearances.

• And while Reagan had prominence as an actor and a Democrat-turned-Republican activist (he gave his popular “A Time for Choosing” speech in 1964 to promote Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign), he wasn’t a popular conservative figure until after he exchanged his governorship for a radio program in 1975.

• Russell Riley, co-chair of the Miller Center’s Presidential Oral History Program, told History in 2020 that after Reagan left office as governor in 1975, he developed “a radio presence in a way that really puts him in the public consciousness as a conservative voice in America.” Moreno was eight years old when Reagan started his radio show.

1. Moreno is facing scrutiny for the “dubious claims” and “string of inconsistencies that have dogged his campaign” as lie after lie is exposed. Moreno has shown Ohioans he can’t be trusted after he was caught lying about selling the Chinese-made Buick Envision which contributed to “Ohio jobs being shipped overseas,” lying about his phony “rags-to-riches” story as the “signature pitch” of his campaign, lying about shutting down Cleveland State’s Confucius Institute, lying about “escap[ing]” socialism, lying about bringing 5G to Cleveland, and lying about his business origin story.

2. Moreno’s record has been clouded by lawsuits that “could prove to be a liability,” including over a dozen lawsuits where Moreno refused to pay his workers the overtime they earned, then deliberately destroyed evidence he was legally required to keep to get out of it. Moreno was found liable for wage theft by a jury – forcing Moreno to pay over $400,000 in damages to his employees and settle over a dozen similar wage theft cases. After he got caught, Moreno repeatedly lied about the case and multiple fact-checks found his excuses “false.”

3. Moreno would vote for a national abortion ban that would overturn the will of Ohioans. Moreno has said he is “100% pro-life without exceptions,” called the overturning of Roe v. Wade a “monumental victory,” and opposes protecting a woman’s right to access contraception, including birth control pills.

4. Moreno is not the outsider he claims to be. Moreno exploited his “inside” political connections, hefty campaign contributions, and public board appointments for years to steer government contracts and taxpayer dollars toward his businesses – leading Moreno to ultimately cash out for “at least $5 million.”

• The anniversary of the Dobbs decision this past week was a reminder of the many Ohio voters who showed up at the polls last fall, to enshrine reproductive rights in Ohio’s constitution, and vote by an overwhelming majority to enshrine abortion access in our state.

• But unfortunately, our work isn’t over.

• Bernie Moreno, who is running for U.S. Senate, supports a national abortion ban, and if he were elected to the Senate he would overrule the will of thousands of voters who made their voices heard on reproductive rights last year.

• Ohioans made it clear where we stand. Sherrod Brown has also made it clear he stands with us and has always been an advocate for a woman’s right to make her own healthcare decisions.

• Moreno doesn’t care that Ohioans overwhelmingly support a woman’s right to choose. Frankly, it’s disrespectful of Moreno to campaign on supporting a national abortion ban when he knows that flies directly in the face of what Ohioans voted for last fall.

• Moreno won’t stand with Ohioans and he doesn’t support our values. We can’t let Moreno take away our rights and take away our peace of mind. We have to reelect Sherrod this November.

3. Why are you lying to Ohio workers by claiming you never sold Chinese-made SUVs? Will you apologize to Ohio workers who have criticized you for contributing to their jobs being “shipped overseas” and “hurt[ing] Mahoning Valley workers and families?”

4. Why are you lying about shutting down Cleveland State’s Confucius Institute?
