QUICK CLIPS: Ohioans In Youngstown Slam Bernie Moreno For Lying To Ohioans, “Not The Person Ohioans Deserve To Represent Them”

Former President of Local 1112 in Lordstown Dave Green: “We Need Somebody In Office That’s Going To Earn The Support Of Working People… Not A Car Salesman Who Continues To Lie About What He’s Doing And How He’s Doing It.”

Columbus, OH – On Friday in Youngstown, Former President of Local 1112 in Lordstown Dave Green and resident Linda Taylor called out Bernie Moreno for telling “lie after lie” to Ohioans which makes Moreno “not the person Ohioans deserve to represent them.”

WATCH MORE FROM WFMJ HERE

WFMJ: “Former Lordstown UAW Local 1112 and UAW Region 2B Director President Dave Green as well as a few others are speaking out against Ohio U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno… they say they can’t trust Moreno because he allegedly lied about not selling Chinese-made cars.”

Former President of Local 1112 in Lordstown Dave Green: “Putting profits over people is not what people in the Mahoning Valley deserve. We deserve somebody who’s going to fight for working people and has continued to fight for working people like Senator Sherrod Brown.”

Tribune Chronicle: Sherrod Brown supporters say Bernie Moreno cannot be trusted
David Skolnick
June 15, 2024

  • Bernie Moreno, the Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate, cannot be trusted based on “lies” he’s told about his past, a pair of U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown supporters said in Youngstown as part of the Ohio Democratic Party’s “Pants-on-Fire” tour.
  • Dave Green, the United Auto Workers Region 2B director, and retired educator Linda Taylor spoke Friday at Wick Park against Moreno.
  • “If you’re going to lie to people you better think twice,” Green said. “We’re not that ignorant. We can see it coming.”
  • This was the second time in three months that those in organized labor have spoken against Moreno…
  • Moreno attracted criticism for selling the Buick Envision, a vehicle made in China, despite saying a number of times he refused to do so.
  • Moreno settled wage theft lawsuits after a Massachusetts judge ordered him to pay more than $400,000 to two former employees for failing to pay overtime in violation of that state’s labor laws. He also faced discrimination lawsuits in Cleveland that were settled out of court.
  • Moreno’s been accused of lying about his background, his business origin story and for shutting down Cleveland State’s Confucius Institute while serving on its board of trustees, according to various media reports.
  • “We deserve somebody who’s going to fight for working people and continue to fight for working people like Sen. Sherrod Brown,” said Green, a former UAW Local 1112 president who worked at Lordstown GM.
  • “We need somebody in office that’s going to earn the support of working people, that has fought for working people for decades, not a car salesman who continues to lie about what he’s doing and how he’s doing it,” Green added.
  • Taylor said, “Bernie Moreno tells lie after lie to Ohio voters to sell us a phony political persona that he thinks will win him votes. It’s clear to me that Bernie Moreno will say whatever he thinks he needs to say to win. He’s a liar and that is not the person Ohioans deserve to represent them.”

Ahead Of Dobbs Anniversary, Reminder That Bernie Moreno Supports National Abortion Ban

Columbus, OH –  The upcoming two-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade is a stark reminder that Bernie Moreno supports a national abortion ban and called the decision that stripped women of their freedom to make their own personal healthcare decisions a “monumental victory.”

“Bernie Moreno would overturn the will of Ohioans with a national abortion ban. Moreno is out-of-step with Ohioans, who believe that these decisions should stay between women and their doctors,” said ODP spokesperson Katie Smith.

One Week Ahead of the Dobbs Anniversary, Here’s What Ohioans Need To Know About Bernie Moreno’s Support For A National Abortion Ban

  • Bernie Moreno supports a national abortion ban that would overturn the will of Ohioans who voted overwhelmingly to protect abortion rights last year.
  • Moreno said he is “100% pro-life with no exceptions” and that he is “absolute pro-life, no exceptions.”
  • Moreno opposes guaranteeing a woman’s right to access contraception, including birth control pills. Moreno opposes federal protections for IVF and called IVF a “non-issue” a week after the Alabama Supreme Court ruling that prompted clinics to halt IVF treatments.
  • Moreno voted to ban abortion without exceptions for rape or incest in Ohio last year by voting against Issue 1.
  • Moreno celebrated the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, calling it a “monumental victory.”

BAD NEWS BERNIE: Moreno Caught Cozying Up With “Big Player” In FirstEnergy Scandal & Ohioans Call Out Moreno’s Lies

Columbus, OH – Bernie Moreno’s ears were burning this week as the Ohio Democratic Party wrapped up the Pants-On-Fire Tour where Ohioans called out the “string of inconsistencies” haunting him on the campaign trail. And while Ohio leaders called Moreno out as “someone who just does not tell the truth,” Moreno faced scrutiny for “welcoming” the support of a “big player” in the FirstEnergy scandal which cost Ohioans.

NEED-TO-KNOW THIS WEEK:

  • Ohioans in Youngstown, Columbus, Toledo, and Cleveland slammed Moreno for being “someone who just does not tell the truth” following the string of “inaccurate” claims he has made on the campaign trail.
  • Moreno was caught “welcoming” the support and campaigning behind closed doors with Tony George a “big player” in the FirstEnergy scandal which led to a $1.3 billion bailout “that fell on the backs of… everyday Ohioans.”
  • Bernie Moreno is facing more scrutiny after being caught “erroneously claim[ing]” credit for bringing 5G access to Cleveland and for opposing guaranteeing a woman’s right to access contraception, including birth control pills.

🔥 PANTS-ON-FIRE TOUR BURNS THROUGH OHIO: Moreno is facing further fire for his “inaccurate” claims as Ohioans across the state slam Moreno for “embellishing his upbringing” and for being “someone who just does not tell the truth.” Whether it’s lying about his phony “rags-to-riches” story, lying about selling Chinese-made cars, lying about shutting down Cleveland State’s Confucius Institute, lying about bringing 5G access to Cleveland, lying about “escap[ing]” socialism, or lying about his business origin story, Ohioans agree they can’t trust Moreno. Read more about Moreno’s “dishonest statements on campaign trail:”

  • Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz: “The first impression that voters in Ohio have of Bernie Moreno is that he is someone who just does not tell the truth.”
  • UAW Local 14 President Tony Totty: “We have enough liars in D.C. We don’t need to add another one like Bernie Moreno.”
  • The Toledo Blade: “Mr. Kapszukiewicz expressed his concerns about claims Mr. Moreno has shared on the campaign trail that have proven to be inaccurate. He pointed to Mr. Moreno’s assertions that he did not sell the China-made Buick Envision when he owned a Buick-GMC dealership, but he did.”

🔍SPOTTED: BERNIE COZYING UP WITH FIRSTENERGY KEY PLAYER: Moreno was caught this week “welcoming” the support of  a “big player” in the FirstEnergy scandal behind closed doors. Reporting revealing Moreno has been campaigning with Tony George, who had a key role in the scandal that led to a $1.3 billion bailout “that fell on the backs of… everyday Ohioans,” further proof Moreno only looks out for himself. This is not Moreno’s first time cozying up to individuals involved in the largest corruption scandal in state history, with previous reporting finding he “accepted a large donation” from another individual involved in the scandal.

🤥BERNIE THE LIAR UNDER FIRE: After reporting from Ohio Capital Journal discovered that Moreno’s claim that he brought 5G to the City of Cleveland is just another lie that Moreno “still insists” on telling Ohioans, he continues to face scrutiny for his “erroneous” claims.

❌ BERNIE OPPOSES A WOMAN’S RIGHT TO ACCESS CONTRACEPTION: After reporting last week revealed Bernie Moreno “doesn’t support” guaranteeing access to contraceptives like birth control for women across the country, Moreno is facing questions for being “on the opposite side of an issue supported by nearly 6 out of every 10 Ohio voters.” Read more from WVXU here about how Moreno “wants a federal abortion ban” and opposes protecting contraception.

🗞️ WHAT OHIOANS ARE READING THIS WEEK:

  • UAW Local 14 President Tony Totty: “Moreno spent years screwing [auto workers] over, selling Chinese-made cars to make himself richer.”
  • Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz: “Pretend that you are from humble roots and you’ve made yourself into a winner… That’s a great line, but it doesn’t happen to be true.”
  • Axios Cleveland: “Senate candidate Bernie Moreno has erroneously claimed that the 2018 Blockland Solutions conference convinced AT&T to bring 5G to Cleveland.”
  • Cleveland.com: “Bernie Moreno, the Republican Senate candidate, once took credit for helping spur AT&T to offer 5G cellular data service in Cleveland… [But] the company’s 5G Cleveland project predated Moreno’s Blockland project, and that Moreno’s initiative if anything served to pressure local officials to approve the company’s pre-existing plans.”

🐤 TWEET OF THE WEEK:

🎶 CODA: “It’s pretty simple: Ohioans can’t trust Bernie Moreno. If he can’t tell the truth about little stuff, what’s he going to say when Social Security and Medicare are on the line? What’s he going to say if we go to war?”

Clevelanders “Can’t Trust Bernie Moreno” After “Nonstop Lies” and “Phony Persona”

Pants-On-Fire Tour Comes To Cleveland

Cleveland, OH – This morning in Cleveland, Ohio State Representative Phil Robinson, Cleveland Teachers Union Local 279 President Shari Obrenski, and SEIU Local 1199 retiree Lynn Radcliffe slammed Bernie Moreno for lying to and disrespecting Ohioans. Representative Robinson, Obrenski, and Radcliffe highlighted the “string of inconsistencies” from Moreno on the campaign trail and the lies he is telling in a “calculated” attempt to reinvent himself to appeal to voters.

“Clevelanders can’t trust Bernie Moreno to look out for us because he’s too busy lying to our faces,” said Ohio State Representative Phil Robinson. “Whether it’s falsely taking the credit for bringing 5G to Cleveland or lying about shutting down Cleveland State’s Confucius Institute, we can’t trust Moreno to tell the truth – much less fight for us.”

“Time and again, Bernie Moreno betrayed workers to help himself and then lied about it,” said Shari Obrenski, President, Cleveland Teachers Union, Local 279. “He destroyed evidence to try to get out of paying his employees overtime, sold Chinese-made cars at the expense of Ohio’s auto workers, and lied about all of it. Ohio workers won’t fall for Moreno’s lies because it’s clear he is only out for himself.”

“Bernie Moreno is trying to pretend he’s someone he’s not to win Cleveland voters,” said Lynn Radcliffe, SEIU Local 1199 retiree. “His nonstop lies and his phony persona are insulting and they can’t hide the truth: Moreno is a liar who only looks out for himself.”

What Ohioans Need To Know About Bernie Moreno’s Lies:

1. Moreno lies about shutting down Cleveland State’s Confucius Institute while serving on the university’s board – but Columbus Dispatch reporting revealed that the Confucius Institute operated for years after Moreno’s tenure and Moreno approved multiple budgets that funded the Institute. Watch him lie to Ohioans here:

2. Moreno takes the credit for bringing 5G wireless to Cleveland, but the Ohio Capital Journal found that “the record, however, tells a different story” and 5G’s rollout happened thanks to “infrastructure improvements [AT&T] was already planning.”

3. The New York Times exposed Moreno’s phony “riches-to-rags-to-riches,” “only-in-America bootstraps story” as a “calculated process of self-creation.”

4. Moreno repeatedly lies and says he never sold the Chinese-made Buick Envision – an SUV that was always made in China – but Spectrum News found that Moreno sold the car for years and “promoted the vehicles” in numerous ads, including in a customer testimonial.

5. Moreno claims that he came to the United States from Colombia to “escape” socialism but reporting from The Guardian found that Moreno’s lies “do not withstand historical scrutiny.”

6. Moreno is lying about his business origin story, claiming he built his car dealership business “all on his own” and without “handouts” – in reality, Business Insider reported that Moreno received an insider deal to purchase his first dealership at a “dramatically reduced price.”

NEW: Moreno “Welcoming Big Player’s Support” In FirstEnergy Scandal That Cost “Everyday Ohioans”

Ohio Capital Journal: “[Bernie Moreno Is] Welcoming The Support Of A Man Who Brokered What Was Perhaps The Key Relationship In A Scheme…That Fell On The Backs Of Ratepayers — Which Is To Say Everyday Ohioans.”

Columbus, OH –  Bernie Moreno was caught “welcoming” the support and campaigning behind closed doors with Tony George a “big player” in the FirstEnergy scandal which led to a $1.3 billion bailout “that fell on the backs of… everyday Ohioans.” This is not Moreno’s first time cozying up to individuals involved in the largest corruption scandal in state history, with previous reporting finding he “accepted a large donation” from an individual involved in the scandal.

Ohio Capital Journal: Moreno blasted rivals over scandal. Now he’s welcoming a big player’s support
Marty Schladen
June 13, 2024

  • But now [Bernie Moreno is] welcoming the support of a man who brokered what was perhaps the key relationship in a scheme in which Akron-based FirstEnergy paid $61 million to purchase a $1.3 billion bailout that fell on the backs of ratepayers — which is to say everyday Ohioans.
  • The supporter, Cleveland businessman Tony George, invited a now-convicted lawmaker to travel on FirstEnergy’s private jet… and booked the lawmaker and FirstEnergy executives into the same hotel for days of events during which federal prosecutors say the conspiracy began. George was still communicating with the central players in 2020, when the FBI started making arrests.
  • When asked to comment on the seeming hypocrisy, Moreno’s campaign didn’t respond directly.
  • In a Spectrum News 1 debate on Feb. 19, Moreno went after his Republican opponents, State Sen. Matt Dolan and Secretary of State Frank LaRose… But as for Moreno’s problems with figures who were involved in the bailout scandal, they appear to extend only to his political opponents — not his supporters.
  • On May 16, his campaign held a Bourbon With Bernie fundraiser in Mentor. Cleveland businessman Tony George was a host, a privilege for which George paid $2,500.
  • In addition to being a Moreno supporter, George has had a long and lucrative relationship with FirstEnergy. Entities linked to George received nearly $11 million from FirstEnergy over the years, according to a state audit.
  • But George’s role was substantial enough that he was called “Individual B” in FirstEnergy’s deferred prosecution agreement — a document in which the utility copped to its culpability for the bribery scandal, along with paying out $230 million. It lays out Individual B’s close relationship with FirstEnergy’s top executive and to Householder from the fall of 2016, when Householder was plotting his return to the House and then to regain the speaker’s gavel.
  • The Moreno campaign this week declined to answer questions about these matters on the record.
  • It was asked whether Moreno was aware of George’s involvement in the HB 6 affair when Moreno accepted George’s support. It was also asked if Moreno would return George’s money and decline support in the future.
