Senator Mark Kelly To Headline Ohio Democratic Party “Ohio on the Rise” Annual Dinner

COLUMBUS, OH – Today, the Ohio Democratic Party announced that U.S. Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ) will be joining Democratic leaders up and down the ballot for Ohio Democrats’ annual dinner on August 1. This year’s dinner will be themed, “Ohio on the Rise,” and feature Sherrod Brown and Dr. Amy Acton in addition to state and local leaders from throughout Ohio.

“Ohio Democrats are proud to welcome Sen. Mark Kelly to our Ohio on the Rise Annual Dinner,” said Ohio Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Clyde. “From serving our country in uniform to commanding missions in space, Sen. Kelly has dedicated his life to service and leadership. He understands that families are looking for leaders who will lower costs, protect freedoms, and deliver results. We’re honored to have him join us as we continue bringing together Ohioans of all political backgrounds behind our Democratic ticket. Together, we have a clear trajectory toward victory in November.”

“It’s great to be joining Ohio Democrats ahead of such a critical election, and to be supporting strong candidates like Sherrod Brown and leaders up and down the ballot who are laser-focused on lowering costs as many Ohio families – and families throughout the country – are struggling to make ends meet,” said Senator Mark Kelly. “At a time when we’re seeing Washington Republicans and this Administration raising costs at every turn and attacking our freedoms, Ohioans are ready to send a message in November by electing Democratic leaders to help turn Ohio and our country around.”

Additional information will be made available ahead of the Ohio on the Rise dinner in Columbus.

Ohio Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Clyde Issues Statement on Four-Year Anniversary of Dobbs Decision

COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Clyde issued the following statement on the four-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision and the importance of protecting reproductive freedom in Ohio:

“Ohioans want to be able to make critical, deeply personal medical decisions with their doctors, not with politicians in Columbus or Washington looking over their shoulder. On the four-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision, and at a time when we continue to see attacks on abortion access and efforts to interfere in private medical decisions, Ohio Democrats are united in our resolve to protect Ohioans’ reproductive freedom.

“Three years ago, a majority of Ohioans voted to enshrine access to abortion into our state constitution. This November, Ohioans will elect leaders like Justice Jennifer Brunner and Judge Marilyn Zayas who will uphold the law, respect the will of voters, and protect Ohioans’ rights.”

New Polling: Max Miller is in Trouble, Faces Statistical Tie With Brian Poindexter

Brian Poindexter in statistical tie with Max Miller in district Trump won by double digits in 2024

COLUMBUS, OH – New polling is further blaring alarm bells for Republican Congressman Max Miller, with Brian Poindexter in a statistical tie with Miller in a district that Trump won by double digits less than two years ago. Poindexter’s impressive showing is fueled in part by a 17-point edge among self-described Independent voters in Ohio’s 7th congressional district, with nearly half picking Poindexter. This comes after the Cook Political Report moved Ohio’s 7th congressional district race from “solid R” to “lean R” last week.

“Every day is a nightmare for Max Miller’s general election campaign with damning headlines, disastrous polling, and his devastating economic policies raising costs and ripping healthcare from Ohio families,” said Ohio Democratic Party Communications Director Marisa Nahem. “While Miller continues to spend his days doing damage control, Ohioans of all political backgrounds are supporting Brian Poindexter who will lower costs, support Ohioans, and get Washington working for working families again.”

This new polling also continues to shed light on the stark reality of President Donald Trump’s tanking approvals in Ohio. While Trump won this district by 11 points in 2024, his approval rating sits at just 44 percent, with disapproval at 54 percent – and strong disapproval at 46 percent, according to this polling. Recent Cook Political Report analysis emphasized that Donald Trump’s political problems could have “metastasized and spread to infect Republican candidates on the November ballot in swing states and districts,” with his disastrous economic policies that Republicans like Max Miller supported – like his tariffs, healthcare cuts, and reckless war with Iran – sky-rocketing prices for Ohio families.

Ohio Capital Journal: Ohio will lose 51,000 jobs, $5.3 billion due to Trump cuts by 2029, new analysis finds

COLUMBUS, OH – Donald Trump and Washington Republicans’ economic policies are devastating Ohio families, with a new analysis emphasizing that under their spending bill, Ohio will lose more than 50,000 jobs – the eighth most jobs lost of any state in the country – and more than $5B from the state economy by 2029. This new analysis is also making clear that while Trump and Washington Republicans are implementing massive cuts to Medicaid and SNAP food assistance, and costing Ohio billions in federal funding, “Trump’s signature law gave huge tax cuts to the richest Americans,” and “amounted to yet another upward redistribution of wealth.”

“Ohioans don’t need another analysis to tell them what they already know – thanks to Trump and Washington Republicans’ harmful economic policies, costs are skyrocketing, healthcare is getting more expensive and jobs in Ohio are going away while the rich get more tax breaks,” said Ohio Democratic Party Communications Director Marisa Nahem. “Ohio Republicans up and down the ballot are going to have to own the fact that their policies are costing Ohio tens of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars, and ripping away healthcare from families, and Ohioans are going to hold them accountable for it in November.”

Read more from Ohio Capital Journal about how President Trump and Washington Republicans are ripping healthcare from Ohio families, raising costs for Ohioans, taking away jobs, and forcing Ohio to lose billions from the state economy:

Ohio Capital Journal: Ohio will lose 51,000 jobs, $5.3 billion due to Trump cuts by 2029, new analysis finds

  • Ohio will lose 51,000 jobs and $5.3 billion from the state economy in 2029, according to a new analysis.
  • That’s the effect that cuts to Medicaid and food assistance under a massive 2025 spending law will have when they’re fully phased in. It’s also the consequence of Republicans allowing Affordable Care Act subsidies to expire at the end of the last year, according to a Commonwealth Fund analysis which was published last week.
  • When Congress allowed them to expire, most of the 600,000 Ohioans who bought insurance on the exchanges saw premiums for their plans double. That prompted many to drop down to cheaper, lower-quality plans and many more to leave the marketplace altogether. KFF reports that Ohio enrollment was down 20% this year.
  • The legislation cut more than $900 billion over 10 years from Medicaid. It also cut $187 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps or EBT.
  • Along with deep cuts to the safety net, Trump’s signature law gave huge tax cuts to the richest Americans. The Commonwealth Fund analysis said it amounted to yet another upward redistribution of wealth.
  • “Under (the Trump spending law), cuts to health and nutrition programs largely harm Americans with lower incomes, while tax cuts primarily benefit those with higher incomes,” it said.
  • “The (Congressional Budget Office) estimates that Americans in with lowest 10% of incomes will lose about $1,200 per year (3.1% of their incomes), while those with the top 10% of incomes will gain $13,600 per year (2.7% of their incomes). Other analyses reached similar conclusions.”
  • The cuts won’t just harm low-income Americans, the analysis said, they’ll damage entire state economies. It’s a consequence of taking away huge streams of funding for healthcare and food.
  • “In 2029, federal Medicaid funding will drop by $90.9 billion, causing state GDPs to fall by $118.5 billion,” it said.
  • “Medicaid cuts also mean 996,000 fewer jobs nationwide in 2029, half of which will be health-related, including in hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, or nursing homes. States with the largest job losses include California, New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Texas, Arizona, Ohio, and Michigan, which lose between 150,200 and 36,600 jobs.”
  • It projected that Ohio will lose the eighth-most jobs — 51,200.
  • It also said the state will lose $4.4 billion in federal funding, thereby reducing state GDP by $5.4 billion and state and local revenue collection by $368 million.

Ohio Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Clyde Calls on Gov. Mike DeWine to Veto Harmful Vote-by-Mail Restrictions

COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Clyde issued the following statement calling on Governor Mike DeWine to veto Ohio Republicans’ latest vote-by-mail photo ID legislation, which local elections officials are already slamming as “just bad for election administration”:

“Ohio’s elections are already safe and secure. These new photo ID requirements for voting by mail are unnecessary and will create new hurdles for eligible Ohioans casting their ballot. Voting is the foundation of our democracy, and eligible voters should not face additional barriers to making their voices heard.

“Local election officials from both parties have raised concerns about the confusion and administrative burdens this legislation could create, yet Ohio Republicans pushed forward anyway. Governor DeWine should listen to the election experts on the front lines, reject this unnecessary legislation, and veto this bill.”

The Columbus Dispatch’s Editorial Board recently joined the growing calls urging Gov. DeWine to veto this legislation – emphasizing that Ohio’s elections are already safe and secure, and calling this “a ridiculous and cumbersome requirement that would do nothing to stop fraud.”
