NEW: Bernie Moreno Approved Plans That “Raised [Health Care] Prices For Patients” While “Reward[ing]” Executives

American Journal: Bernie Moreno Backed Plan To Raise Health Care Costs, Reward Hospital Executives

Columbus, OH – New reporting from the American Journal found that while serving on the board of MetroHealth, Bernie Moreno approved budget plans that “gave bonuses to executives” at the same time the hospital was “increas[ing] prices on most of its services” at taxpayers’ expense – the latest example that Ohioans “can’t trust Moreno to lower the cost” of health care.

  • Republican U.S. Senate candidate Bernie Moreno served on the board of a hospital corporation that gave bonuses to executives and raised prices for patients.
  • From 2019 to 2021, Moreno was on the board of MetroHealth, a hospital system with locations in and near Cleveland. Moreno was appointed to the board at the request of MetroHealth CEO Akram Bustros.
  • In 2019, Moreno and the MetroHealth board approved two new budgets that implemented a based variable compensation plan. These plans tie employee pay, particularly for senior leadership, to profitability. In other words, MetroHealth executives got bigger paychecks if the corporation earned more money.
  • According to public disclosures, MetroHealth increased prices on most of its services following the adoption of the based variable plan. Child delivery, both natural and by C-section, spiked by nearly 5%. Fetal non stress tests, which are intended to check the health of a developing fetus, went up 110%. Emergency care for patients with life-threatening injuries rose by nearly 85%.
  • MetroHealth reports that 90% of its patients are covered by public health insurance, meaning that government programs funded by taxpayers covered the bulk of the price increases. When Moreno was on the board, MetroHealth took in $152 million in Ohio taxpayer funds and $1.6 million in federal funds.
  • A Moreno spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment for this story.

Ohio Dems Chair: Ahead of Ohio’s Voter Registration Deadline, This is What’s at Stake

Columbus, OH — Ahead of Ohio’s voter registration deadline, Ohio Democratic Party Chair Elizabeth Walters released the following statement.

“This election cycle, all eyes are on Ohio. As usual, Republicans are playing every card in a last-ditch attempt to force their extreme agenda on Ohioans by making voting as difficult as they can.

There’s just a few days left before the deadline to register to vote, and we need all hands on deck so every Ohioan can cast their ballot. If you’re already registered, double check that you’re not one of the 155,000 voters Frank LaRose has purged this year alone. Then, reach out to three friends and make sure they’re registered as well. This election is too important to sit on the sidelines.”

Ahead of the November election, Ohio Democrats are organizing to ensure that every Ohioan is able to cast their vote. Democrats are running a robust voter access program that meets voters where they’re at and makes sure they’re up to date on the latest voter identification requirements Ohioans with questions can call our voter access hotline at 844-OHI-VOTE (844-644-8683).

Ohioans can register to vote or check their registration status at https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/voters/register/ through the end of day on Monday, October 7th. Early voting begins Tuesday, October 8th.

NEW: Watchdog Reveals Frank LaRose’s “Worst Removal Practices” Likely Purged Eligible Voters

Columbus, OH- This week, a new report revealed that in Ohio’s far too frequent voter purges, Secretary of State Frank LaRose has failed to safeguard against eligible voters getting removed from the rolls.  The report singled out Ohio for having the “worst removal practices” when it came to purging eligible voters.

The report further explained that “at nearly every turn, the state makes it hard for voters to stay on the registration rolls, and the totality of Ohio’s removal practices […] make it likely that eligible voters will be improperly purged.”

LaRose claims that in Ohio’s elections, “it’s easy to vote and hard to cheat” but continues with his aggressive voter purges that clearly disenfranchises eligible voters, and disproportionately minority voters. He wants to have it both ways, at the expense of Ohio voters.

“After three statewide losses in a row and a fourth on the way, it’s frankly unsurprising that LaRose is resorting to indiscriminately kicking voters off the rolls,” said Ohio Democratic Party spokeswoman Katie Seewer. “This report confirms what voters have seen unfold for years: Ohio Republicans know they can’t win on their own.
