Columbus, OH — Following Judge Jackson’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, despite baseless attacks from the Republicans who hope to oversee judicial confirmations as members of the U.S. Senate, Ohio Black women leaders released the following statements in response:  

“With the confirmation of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, our country is one step closer to a Supreme Court that understands the struggles of working families and prioritizes civil rights. Today’s historic vote gives hope to millions of young Black girls, who for the first time see someone who looks like themselves on the highest court in the country, that they can achieve their dreams. Judge Jackson is a supremely qualified jurist with the right disposition for the job – and it’s embarrassing that Ohio Republicans running for U.S. Senate have parroted lies about her to cover for their anti-worker agenda that harms Ohio families.” -Ohio Legislative Black Caucus President Juanita Brent, Cleveland 

“Congratulations to Judge Jackson for her historic confirmation to the Supreme Court. Judge Jackson is uniquely prepared to serve on the highest court in our country, which is why her appointment has earned bipartisan support, uniting civil rights groups, law enforcement, labor unions and business groups. Ohio Democrats Bring “Cost of Corruption” Tour to Toledo

From the Largest Public Corruption Scandal in State History to Major Tax Breaks for the Wealthy, Ohioans are Paying Billions for Republican Corruption

Toledo, OH —  Today, Ohio Democratic Party Chair Elizabeth Walters, Ohio Auditor candidate Taylor Sappington and Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken brought Ohio Democrats’ “Cost of Corruption” tour to Toledo to highlight the high costs Ohioans are paying for GOP corruption under Mike DeWine’s leadership.

Ohio Democrats drew the contrast between the high cost of Republican corruption and the Democratic plan to invest in working families and put the interests of working Ohioans first.

“At a time when too many Ohioans are worried about high costs and making ends meet, Mike DeWine and his fellow Republicans are making you pay the price for their corruption while Democrats are laser-focused on investing in working families,” said Chair Walters. 

Under Mike DeWine’s leadership, Ohioans are paying billions for GOP corruption as Republican politicians look to line their own pockets and the pockets of dark money interest groups, all while leaving hard-working Ohioans behind.

“I know firsthand how hard it is when you’re struggling to make ends meet – to put food on the table or pay for prescription drugs. The last thing we should be asking hard-working Ohioans to shell out for is GOP corruption that puts working families further and further behind,” said Ohio Auditor candidate Taylor Sappington.

Ohio Democrats are offering a better way forward.

“Every Republican on the Redistricting Commission – from Mike DeWine, President Huffman, Speaker Cupp, on down – broke the law and rubber-stamped gerrymandered maps, and because of their actions, Ohioans will likely pay as much as $25 million to conduct two primaries,” said Lucas County Commissioner Pete Gerken.

Ohioans are paying BILLIONS of dollars for GOP corruption at Mike DeWine’s statehouse, including:

• $287,000 every single day for subsidies that bail out an out-of-state coal plant and are tied to the largest public corruption scandal in state history. The subsidies are estimated to cost Ohioans up to $1.8 billion by 2030.
• $9 billion for special interest tax giveaways that mostly benefit for-profit corporations.
• $1.85 billion in tax breaks for the wealthy and well-connected, including wealthy GOP lawmakers who leave working Ohioans behind.
• $118 million in improper Medicaid payments made to ineligible dead or incarcerated individuals.
• $20 million promised in tax credits to Lordstown Motors, a company currently under investigation by the DOJ and SEC and that employs DeWine’s grandson as its lobbyist.
• $17.5 million settlement for a man who was paralyzed after being tackled by state prison guards.
• $9 million for the election chaos created by Republicans who refuse to pass fair maps. Their refusal to do their jobs will likely make a May 3 primary impossible, likely costing Ohioans another $20 million.
• $763,000 and counting to litigate the GOP-gerrymandered maps in court.
• $39,000 for Mike DeWine’s private airplane travel to taxpayer-funded photo ops in 2019.

At a time when Ohio families are worried about their ability to make ends meet, the last thing they should be spending their hard-earned money on is the corruption running rampant at Mike DeWine’s statehouse. Ohio Democrats are ready to offer a better way forward.

Columbus, OH —  In case you missed it, Frank LaRose is running out of sides of his mouth to talk out of, once again trying to deny the statement he was recorded saying. After the Ohio Capital Journal reported on Friday that LaRose told a group of GOP donors and activists that he “certainly wouldn’t oppose” impeaching Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor and her impeachment “may be the right thing to do,” LaRose is now denying he called for her impeachment, despite a recording proving otherwise.

Frank LaRose is showing Ohio voters that once again, the only thing that we know for sure about Frank LaRose is that he’s a phony. From calling GOP-gerrymandered maps “asinine” yet voting for them anyway, to trying to claim he didn’t say what he’s on tape saying, it’s clear Frank LaRose can’t be trusted.

“Two-faced Frank LaRose is at it again, talking out of both sides of his mouth and showing Ohioans he can’t be trusted. The only thing Ohioans can count on Frank LaRose to do is betray them in order to advance his own interests. Instead of blaming anyone but himself for the election chaos he’s caused, it’s time for LaRose to do his job and pass a fair map,” said Ohio Democratic Party spokesperson Matt Keyes.

• Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose on Tuesday denied that he had called for the impeachment of Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor after she had repeatedly ruled against LaRose and the rest of her fellow Republicans on the Ohio Redistricting Commission.
• LaRose’s comments come four days after he told a group of Union County Republicans that Justice O’Connor had “violated her oath of office” and that for the legislature to impeach her “may be the right thing to do”.
• Tired, apparently, of partisan gerrymandering, Ohio voters in 2015 overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment that requires districts be drawn so that the partisan makeup of the legislature resembles the partisan breakdown in recent statewide elections. 
• This year, using the new system for the first time, the five Republicans on the seven-member redistricting commission have passed four sets of maps that O’Connor and the three Democrats on the Supreme Court have ruled are too partisan.
• Meanwhile, Republican frustration with O’Connor, who will leave the court at the end of the year, has been boiling over. Some Republican members of the legislature last month floated the idea of impeachment.
• Gov. DeWine called the notion “extraordinary” and said it’s a bad idea to talk about removing judges whenever one disagrees with their decisions. But LaRose, the secretary of state, wasn’t so reticent on Friday when asked at a Union County Republican breakfast if O’Connor should be impeached.
• “I think that she has not upheld her oath of office, and that to me is a basic test of a public servant,” he said. “That’s up to the state legislature, whether they want to impeach the chief justice or not. I certainly wouldn’t oppose it.”
• At Tuesday’s event, LaRose tried to draw a distinction between saying impeachment may be the right thing to do and actually calling for it.
• “The thing that I did was not call for anybody to be impeached,” he said. “I answered a question that was asked at a little breakfast gathering where I was with a group of supporters in Union County and what I said was, ‘It’s up to the state legislature.’ There are 33 senators and 99 representatives. If they gather evidence and hold that trial for an impeachment, if they decide as the people’s representatives to do that, then I don’t oppose that.”
• Democratic Secretary of State candidate Chelsea Clark said LaRose’s comments about O’Connor make him unfit for his office.
• “It’s now obvious to anyone that Frank LaRose can’t be trusted to administer organized elections and now when he’s called out for the chaos, he wants to blame the referees,” she said in an email. “To claim ‘it would feel good’ to impeach the chief justice because he disagrees with the court’s rendering is pathetic. For someone who claims to believe in separation of powers, Secretary LaRose has no problem trying to overturn the will of the people.”

Columbus, OH —  As early voting gets underway today, Ohioans are faced with tough questions, with many even wondering who will represent them in Congress and the state legislature thanks to Republicans’ failures to do their jobs and pass fair maps. But the toughest question facing voters is which Frank LaRose are they going to get on any given day.

Last week, in a room full of Republican activists and donors, LaRose leaned in on impeaching Justice Maureen O’Connor for doing her job and upholding the Ohio Constitution. Then today, LaRose tried to walk those comments back and deflect any criticism that’s come his way. 

It’s clear LaRose is trying to have it both ways – he can’t afford to lose Republican support in a party that’s already so skeptical of him that a party leader tried to leave him off of the endorsement slate. But he’s also worked hard to curate a phony image of bipartisanship that never bears out in his words, deeds or actions.

This all leaves Ohioans to wonder which Frank LaRose is the real Frank LaRose, because Frank LaRose is a phony.

“Two-faced Frank LaRose is at it again, talking out of both sides of his mouth and showing Ohioans he can’t be trusted. The only thing Ohioans can count on Frank LaRose to do is betray them in order to advance his own interests. Instead of blaming anyone but himself for the election chaos he’s caused, it’s time for LaRose to do his job and pass a fair map, ” said Ohio Democratic Party spokesperson Matt Keyes.

And while LaRose is out on his apology tour, doing everything but his job, Cleveland.com is reporting on the headaches voters will face because of the chaos LaRose created:

“Due to printing delays, voters who will show up in person starting Tuesday through the week’s end will receive a ballot that is a PDF printout of the normal ballot. Voters will each complete it, then seal it in a security envelope and turn it in, Cuyahoga County Board of Elections Director Tony Perlatti said,” writes Cleveland.com.

The cost of corruption Ohioans are paying thanks to Frank LaRose, Mike DeWine and their Republican friends is too high a price to pay. Ohio Democrats are offering a better way forward: investing in Ohio workers and helping working families get ahead.
