Sherrod has dedicated his life to fighting for Ohioans and the Dignity of Work — a concept inspired by the work and writings of Pope Leo XIII and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It’s the belief that hard work should pay off for everyone, no matter who you are, where you live, or what kind of work you do. Whether you punch a clock or swipe a badge, earn a salary or make tips, are raising children or caring for an aging parent, Sherrod is fighting for you.
Born and raised in Mansfield, Ohio, Sherrod saw firsthand how corporations lobbied for tax breaks and bad trade deals that shipped Ohio jobs overseas. That’s why he’s always opposed unfair trade deals that hurt Ohio workers and why he stood up to his own party to lead the opposition against NAFTA.
Sherrod believes that when you love your country, you fight for the people who make it work. He’s never been afraid to stand up to corporations and special interests to level the playing field for Ohioans — from standing up to Wall Street to taking on Big Pharma. He has worked with both parties to pass some of the most significant legislation in recent years, and he continues to work across the aisle to hold corporations accountable.
Sherrod lives in Cleveland with his wife Connie Schultz, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and author. Sherrod and Connie drive Jeeps made by union workers in Toledo, and are blessed with a growing family, including three daughters, a son, eight grandchildren, and their beloved rescue dogs, Franklin and Walter.
CHIPS AND SCIENCE ACT: After years of urging investment in domestic manufacturing and bringing good jobs back home to the United States, Brown helped write and pass the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, which includes historic funding for domestic semiconductor manufacturing. The CHIPS Act will also support the next generation of Ohio workers, manufacturers and the companies they work with by providing $200 million over five years to promote the growth of the semiconductor workforce, which will need to add 90,000 workers by 2025.
DELIVERING FOR VETERANS: The PACT Act - The PACT Act is the result of a years-long fight by Brown, veterans and advocates to ensure veterans exposed to toxins can access the health care and disability benefits they’ve earned and deserve. Keeping the Chillicothe VA Open - Brown (D-OH) brought Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Denis McDonough to the Chillicothe VA Medical Center (CVAMC) so the VA Secretary could hear from those who would be impacted by the VA’s recommendations to close down the CVAMC. Brown also held multiple roundtable discussions and meetings with veterans, employees and CVAMC and union leadership. Brown, the longest serving Ohio Senator on the U.S. Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, saved the Chillicothe VA, ensuring 20,000 veterans will continue to receive local treatment and medical access.
LOWERING OHIOANS’ COST OF LIVING: Brown was instrumental in passing the Inflation Reduction Act. The legislation will lower prescription costs for seniors, invest in domestic energy production and manufacturing, and reduce carbon emissions by roughly 40 percent by 2030.
INVESTING AND UPGRADING OHIO’S INFRASTRUCTURE: As Chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, which has jurisdiction over public transportation, Brown worked with senators on both sides of the aisle to secure record resources for Ohio communities to expand and improve service, upgrade infrastructure, train workers, and transition to new pollution-free buses. Public transit agencies in Ohio have already received funds and agencies across the state are expected to receive $1.3 billion in funding over the next five years.
