COLUMBUS — Donald Trump is once again attacking Ohio communities, families and workers with the budget plan his administration released today.
“With this budget proposal, Donald Trump is showing us what his priorities are — and his main priority is protecting his massive tax giveaway for the wealthy and corporations like General Motors, which is laying off 14,000 workers despite getting a huge windfall from the GOP tax scam,” said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper. “Trump and the Republican Party care about their donors. They don’t care about Ohio workers who have lost their jobs because of outsourcing, Ohio farmers hurt by Trump’s disastrous trade war, Ohio families that depend on food assistance, Ohioans who rely on Lake Erie for fresh drinking water or need affordable health coverage to deal with opioid addiction or chronic illnesses.”
The Trump budget:
Cuts funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative from $300 million to $30 million and eliminates the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Sea Grant program, which monitor and protect the health of Lake Erie, which provides drinking water to 11 million people
Cuts nearly $850 million over the next decade from the Trade Adjustment Assistance program, which provides support and retraining for workers displaced by trade or outsourcing — Policy Matters Ohio found that more than 124,000 Ohio workers lost their jobs because of trade from 2001 through 2015
Slashes $3.6 billion from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, hurting farmers by cutting crop insurance premium subsidies and tightening commodity payment limits — even as the “U.S. agriculture industry is going through its worst crisis since the 1980s” — and cutting food assistance by 30 percent, instituting mandatory work requirements and a new bureaucratic nightmare called the “Harvest Box”
