Statement from Ohio Young Black Democrats on Gov. Jeb Bush’s Comments

COLUMBUS – The Ohio Young Black Democrats today released the following statement in reaction to Gov. Jeb Bush’s comments yesterday about Republicans’ appeal to African Americans.

“Governor Bush’s comments are exactly why so many African-American voters have rejected the Republican Party,” said Ohio Young Black Democrats President Dontavius Jarrells. “The Democratic Party isn’t the party of ‘free stuff.’ We are the party of expanding opportunity for all Americans — not just millionaires like Jeb Bush. Republicans like Donald Trump and Ted Cruz have practiced the politics of division and disrespected President Obama at every turn. They’ve adopted policies that make it harder for people of color and young people to vote. Trust me, African Americans notice these things, and we will be making our voices heard at the ballot box.”

Yesterday Bush was at a South Carolina fundraiser, discussing how Republicans could win Ohio if they doubled their share of the African-American vote, and said, “Our message is one of hope and aspiration. It isn’t one of division and get in line and we’ll take care of you with free stuff. Our message is one that is uplifting — that says you can achieve earned success.”
