Sen. Rob Portman Held Fundraisers on Same Days He Missed Homeland Security Hearings

COLUMBUS — On the heels of a new report that revealed Sen. Rob Portman has missed an alarming 72 percent of his Homeland Security Committee hearings during his time in the Senate, records show that Portman repeatedly skipped committee hearings on days he made time to host campaign fundraisers.

“The more we learn about Senator Portman’s refusal to attend the vast majority of his Homeland Security hearings, the worse it gets,” said Ohio Democratic Party spokesman Daniel van Hoogstraten. “Senator Portman has no problem making time for the Washington power brokers and wealthy special interests he serves, but he failed to show up for work when America’s national security was at stake. This is a shameful example of exactly what Ohioans can’t stand about Washington — insiders like Beltway Rob prioritizing their twisted D.C. politics and their wealthy, well-connected friends, at the expense of Ohio’s families and our country’s safety.”

Portman missed hearings that examined terrorists’ access to visas, domestic terrorism threats and national preparedness for biological and chemical threats, but on the same days he found time for expensive lobbyist fundraisers in both Washington, D.C., and New York City. Here are some examples:

Ohio service members earlier today condemned Portman for his failure to prioritize Ohioans and America’s national security.

Ohio Democratic Party Executive Director Greg Beswick also spoke out against Portman for missing 72 percent of his Homeland Security hearings.

This comes on the heels of a new report revealing that Sen. Portman is touting his advocacy on behalf of company that sold dangerously defective helmets to the U.S. military and that Sen. Portman intervened to help the company receive an additional military contract after their helmets were recalled for safety concerns.
