PEPPER OP-ED: “One Person, One Vote” Threatened By U.S. Supreme Court Case

Op-ed from Chairman David Pepper in Cleveland Plain Dealer, Dec. 9. 2015

This past November, Ohio voters struck a blow against partisan gerrymandering and overwhelmingly approved legislative redistricting reform.

One month later, the U.S. Supreme Court is considering a case that could upend the legislative redistricting process all across the country, throwing maps into doubt and causing electoral chaos — all for political purposes.

Sometimes it’s one step forward, five steps back when you’re fighting for a fairer¬†democracy.

The case that was heard this week — Evenwel v. Abbott¬†— threatens the democratic principle of “one person, one vote,” which has ensured equal representation for everyone in America, no matter where they live, for decades.
