Ohio Veterans and Servicemembers Call on Portman to Step Down from Homeland Security Committee for Missed Hearings on Domestic Terrorism

COLUMBUS — Today, U.S. Air Force veteran and former state Rep. Connie Pillich and Cleveland City Councilman Terrell Pruitt, a major in the Ohio Army National Guard, called on Sen. Rob Portman to step down from the Homeland Security Committee because of missed hearings on domestic terrorism. A recent report revealed that Portman missed an alarming 72 percent of his Homeland Security Committee hearings during his time in the Senate, including hearings on “domestic terrorism threats.”

“This weekend was a tragic reminder that combating domestic terrorism must be one of our nation’s top priorities,” said U.S. Air Force veteran and former state Rep. Connie Pillich. “By failing to attend a majority of his Homeland Security Committee hearings — including some that dealt directly with terrorism here at home — Senator Rob Portman has failed to do the job he was elected to do. At times like these, our representatives in Washington must prioritize keeping America safe first and foremost. Senator Portman ought to explain why he has skipped so many meetings, and if political demands currently take too much of the senator’s time, he should consider stepping down from the committee.”

“There is no excuse — and certainly not during the trying times we live in — for Senator Portman to skip the vast majority of the hearings in the committee tasked with oversight and legislation related to our nation’s security,” said Cleveland City Councilman Terrell Pruitt, a major in the Ohio Army National Guard. “The stakes are too high to put self-interested politics over the fight against terrorism, and Senator Portman owes it to Ohio and our nation to step down from the Homeland Security Committee.”

Among the nearly 200 Homeland Security Committee hearings that Portman skipped, many dealt with preventing homegrown and domestic terrorism. Here are some examples of the hearings that were missed by Portman.
