Ohio Democratic Party Statement on Portman’s Continued Support for Donald Trump

GOP State Auditor Opposing Trump, But Portman Thinks Trump Presidency Would Be “Great”

COLUMBUS — As Donald Trump holds a rally today in Columbus, Ohio Democratic Party spokesman Daniel van Hoogstraten issued the following statement in response to Sen. Rob Portman’s continued support for Donald Trump. In the face of Trump’s sexist, anti-veteran and racist comments – including his recent refusal to immediately denounce the Ku Klux Klan – an increasing number of Republicans are refusing to support Trump, including Ohio Auditor Dave Yost. However, Sen. Rob Portman has repeatedly voiced his support for Trump, saying he “intends to support” him if he’s the nominee.

“Even as Republicans in Ohio and across the country are denouncing Donald Trump, Senator Rob Portman remains obediently loyal to him — which is yet another indication of how out-of-touch Senator Portman has become with Ohio’s values. At his rally today, Trump is sure to make news for the worst reasons, but there is apparently nothing Trump can do or say that is a problem for Senator Portman — not even Trump’s refusal to immediately denounce the Ku Klux Klan. Opposing Trump should be a simple choice, but Senator Portman always puts his own political self-interest over what’s best for Ohio’s working families. With Trump in Senator Portman’s home state, this is a perfect opportunity for Portman to finally denounce Trump’s racist rhetoric, but we’re not holding our breath.”

Here’s a reminder of Portman’s continued support for Trump: He tripled down on his support and said a Trump presidency would be “great.”
