COLUMBUS — The Ohio Democratic Party released the following statement from Communications Director Kirstin Alvanitakis in response to Gov. John Kasich’s comment that women on campus can prevent sexual assault by avoiding “parties where there’s a lot of alcohol.”
To woman wondering how John Kasich would keep her safe from sexual violence on campus: “Don’t go to parties where there’s lots of alcohol.”

“Governor Kasich’s outrageous response to young women who want to feel safe on campus is that they should restrict their behavior — not that policy makers should take steps to prevent sexual assault. Let me say this simply, so that the governor can understand — rape victims are not responsible for rape. It’s on all of us — men and women — to address campus sexual assault.
“I wish I could say this was some sort of gaffe, but this statement is just further evidence of Kasich’s Mad Men-esque worldview, where women can’t ask their own questions of elected officials and instead stay at home and do the laundry or go to Taylor Swift concerts. And today Kasich forgot to mention that he thinks a woman who is raped and becomes pregnant shouldn’t have access to medically accurate information to help her make an informed decision about whether to become a parent or not.”
