COLUMBUS — Even as Americans are gawking in disbelief at Donald Trump’s statement that “there has to be some form of punishment” for women who have an abortion, Gov. John Kasich’s response on this issue deserves equal scrutiny — because it actually reveals the anti-choice movement’s deliberate strategy of undermining Roe through incremental legislation on the path to criminalizing abortion.
CHUCK TODD: Let me ask you this, how do you enforce a ban on abortion?
JOHN KASICH: Well, look, I think it’s rape, incest, life of the mother, and you build some restrictions around it. But I think you have to be very careful in the way you do it. We’re a long way from there.
Statement from Ohio Democratic Party spokeswoman Kirstin Alvanitakis:
“Governor John Kasich’s cowardly non-response on the issue of whether we should criminalize abortion and punish women who make the personal decision not to become a parent is actually quite instructive. Kasich’s extremist record in Ohio is a case study in being ‘careful’ about slowly, but surely taking away women’s freedom to make their own important life decisions for themselves and their families. Under his administration, Kasich has signed into law nearly 20 anti-choice measures, and the number of abortion providers in Ohio has been cut in half. Behind the scenes, Kasich’s staff have been pulling the strings on a number of these restrictions. He even signed into law a ‘gag rule’ that keeps rape victims in the dark from making informed decisions about their health and well-being. Kasich may know enough not to say out loud that women should be punished, but his policies have been harsh and punitive for Ohio’s women.”
