Ohio NAACP Has Called For Huffman’s Resignation, Dayton NAACP Has Called for Huffman’s Medical License to Be Revoked
COLUMBUS — Even as the Ohio NAACP has called for state Sen. Steve Huffman’s resignation from his legislative seat and the Dayton NAACP has called for Huffman’s medical license to be revoked, Congressman Mike Turner has remained silent on the offensive remarks by his state senator and fellow Republican officeholder.
“Mike Turner has a simple choice — he can call out Steve Huffman’s racist and repugnant remarks or he can continue to do nothing and hope no one notices his silence,” said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper. “Turner clearly cares more about supporting his political friends and Donald Trump, rather than supporting his own constituents, who are demanding accountability for Huffman.”
“Racism is a public health crisis, and part of the reason why is that doctors like Steve Huffman have implicit biases that impact how they provide care to Black patients,” said Ohio Democratic Party Vice Chairwoman Rhine McLin. “Huffman’s comments should be condemned by all, no matter what political party you belong to, but Mike Turner’s silence has shown where his true loyalties lie. Ohioans can’t trust Turner to fight for us because he won’t speak out for us.”
Turner’s record of failing to stand up to racism also includes his 2019 vote against closing the Charleston loophole and his vote last week against the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
