COLUMBUS — Donald Trump’s Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue mocked farmers as “whiners” at an event last week, but it’s Trump’s trade war with China that’s inflicting real pain on Ohio soybean farmers, who are saying, “We were a pawn in a pretty aggressive chess game that didn’t turn out well.”
“The Trump administration has been a disaster for farmers across the country and particularly here in Ohio,” said Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper. “Income for American farmers has dropped by $11.8 billion. That doesn’t just hurt the agricultural industry. It hurts all of rural America, as farm owners cut back on spending in their communities.
“When he was on the campaign trail, Donald Trump promised to stop the ‘war on the American farmer.’ He has broken that promise, and Ohio’s farm community is paying the price.”
