Ohio Democratic Party Statement on Congressman LaTourette’s Withdrawal from General Election

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Today, in response to news that Ohio Republican Congressman Steve LaTourette plans to withdraw from the general election and retire at the conclusion of his term, Ohio Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern released the following statement:

“Ohio Republicans are in complete disarray, as they scramble to find a replacement candidate for a competitive district that they never thought they’d have to work to defend. Republicans did not see this vacancy coming, and if they had, they wouldn’t have made the 14th one of the only evenly split districts in the state.

“Congressman LaTourette was absolutely right when he said today that the ‘atmosphere in the House of Representatives no longer encourages the finding of common ground.’ House Republicans, led by Speaker Boehner, continue to set record disapproval levels for Congress because their radical, ideological Tea Party freshmen refuse any and all forms of compromise. A month doesn’t pass where these ideologues don’t threaten to shut down the government, or hold work hostage that is important to Ohio’s economy, like passing a Farm Bill during the worst drought we’ve seen in decades.

“After Senate Bill 5, the men and women of the 14th District understand just how out of touch Ohio’s Republican Party is with working families. Those men and women will rally to elect a Democrat to Congress in this seat, whether it’s this year, or in 2014.”

Thank you, Chris Redfern!! Truer words have never been spoken!

  2. Rebecca Moss says:

What action,if any, is the Democratic party planning to take in order to get voters the ID they need to vote in November? What paperwork is needed to get an ID card that will be acceptable and shouldn”t there be immediate efforts to get a grassroots effort going? How do we know which voters are without the proper ID?Wishing this issue away or trying to fight it in the courts is wasting valuable time.

  3. Bernard Rathmell says:

I have become dismayed by the division of American voters, who profits if we can’t come together? It’s time to begin talking to each other again to end the divisive mind-set in Washinton D.C.

  4. Linda Selvia says:

This could be great news if we have someone ready to jump into this. This is not a time to be tight with money.
If you ask voters to fund a viable candidate, they will see the importance of this. Kasich will continue to attack health care funding unless we fight back.

  5. Gigi Jones says:

Ohio, this is a great opportunity to highlight the fact that this Congress is divisive and inefficient. We need people in Congress who know how to “find common ground”, who have an interest in being there for the people, and not their own selfish goals. I support Chairman Redfern’s position, and look forward to Ohio Dems offering a good candidate for this district.
